Fishing is heating up on the days the
weather permits. The first Shad caught out of the Neuse was brought
to the store this past Saturday, so the $50.00 prize has been won.
Shad are being caught in both the Neuse and Little Rivers. At this
point, the hot baits for the Shad are pet spoons, honey hole spoons,
and Shad darts. Bass fishing is also picking up in the river with
trophy-sized bass coming out of the Neuse on Sunday. Slow rolled
spinner baits, jigs, and soft plastics are the most effective lures.
The Crappie bite has also been hot around eastern North Carolina
over the past few weeks in the rivers and reservoirs with slabs
being caught on minnows, spinners, and jigs. The rockfish bite has
been a little inconsistent, but reports coming from both New Bern
and Little Washington show the bite can be red hot. X- raps and
Smithwicks have been hot as well as larger swimbaits. Trout are
still around, but are few and far between. The lower Neuse near
South River produced a few specks this past week. Until next time,

This past week greeted us with some
warmer weather and quite a few fishermen took advantage of it. The
creeks on the lower Neuse around New Bern warmed up a bit and the
trout pushed back to the banks to feed. The baits of choice this
week were the MR17 in the Electric Chicken, 23, 21, and S colors.
Additionally, the Rapala XR-8 in pink, ghost, silver, and Hothead
along with Gulp baits and Gotcha grubs were hooking fish. Good
reports of Reds poured in from Shackleford down to Bear Inlet, and
also up a few creeks around Cape Carteret. Red fish Magics, Gold
Spoons, and Gulp Pogys worked well on the Reds. The Stripers are
still biting, but are in Federal Waters. Boats leaving from both
Rudee and Oregon Inlets are giving good reports. However, most boats
are spending more time riding to the fish than they are fishing.
Mojos tipped with chartreuse shad are the hot baits for the
Stripers. Although the Neuse is out of its banks now, early in the
week a few cats in the 10-15 lbs class were pulled out. If this
warmer weather will continue, I expect the fishing to keep gaining
speed. Until next time,

Redfish Can’t
Jump
By no
means am I a movie critic; however, I am a fisherman and a
conservationist, which leads me to write this review on Redfish
Can’t Jump. Thursday Evening I made the trip to Wilmington for
the world premier of Redfish Can’t Jump. This fishing
documentary was put together by a few fly fishing junkies who much
like everyone else are greatly concerned with the condition of our
fishery and the threats that our state fish the Red Drum face.
These guys put together a great film that showed reds eating flies,
tailing in the grass, and the frustrations that can be associated
with chasing any inshore fish. But also, they showed the
consequences of setting nets and leaving them unattended, along with
a clear understanding of the over fishing taking place on our
coast. I hope to soon have the film for sale at EZ-Bait and Tackle
and recommend that anyone who enjoys fishing to do yourself a favor
and pick it up. If each one of us becomes better informed of the
dangers facing our fishery and band together, we could make a
difference. To Seth, Wes, Luke, and Josh my hat is off to you on a
job well done, and a big thanks from the fishing community and
myself. Keep it up!

The trout are still chewing if you are
lucky enough to find a creek not covered up with ice. Last week before
the creeks became covered in ice good reports were coming from the
creeks on both the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers. Anglers had the best luck
on Fin-S baits (Arkansas shiner and alewife colors), Gulp shrimp (pearl
and new penny), Gotcha grubs, and mirror lures in the 808, 750, and
electric chicken colors. The Striper Bite has been good up both the
neuse and trent rivers especially around the bridges and the train
tressel. The fish have been biting wobbleheads with artificial eels,
hyperstripers, live eels, and smithwick suspending baits. Anglers have
been flooding the store heading to Rudee Inlet. Citation size stripers
have been a regularly occurring thing however most of the fish are being
caught past the 3 mile mark where it is illegal to keep them. The fish
are biting mojos and shad rigged umbrella rigs, chartreuse has been the
hot color. Fishing on the Neuse and little Rivers will be picking up
soon. Reports have been coming in weekly if you can stand the cold
catfish are biting. Don’t go out and expect to catch 20 in 1 night you
may only have 3 bites but the fish that bite will be large ones. Bass
are biting jigs fished in heavy cover and slow rolled spinnerbaits.
Crappie fishing is steadily picking on both rivers and local ponds
small minnows fished on slip corks, and small crappie jigs will put
slabs in your frying pan.
